Types of lubricants

Water-based lubricant – These lubes are water-soluble, which means it is easily dissolved in water. They are usually the most popular when it comes to sex because they do not weaken condoms. They are also commonly used with sex toys because many adult toys are made from silicone and water-based lube does not affect the quality of silicone such as silicone-based lube. Since water-based lube is water-soluble, it is easy to wash off, meaning you can use it for sensual massages too.

Silicone-based lubricant – Unlike water-based lubes, silicone-based lube does not contain any water. They also do not dissolve in water as easily and are not absorbed by your skin. This means they last a lot longer. The downside is that it can be a challenge to wash it off when you are done. It is also suggested that silicone-based lube is not used with silicone sex toys because it could damage the material.

Oil-based lubricant – An example of oil-based lube is petroleum jelly, which doesn’t have the additives and preservatives found in other types of lube. However, it is not recommended to use an oil-based lube with latex condoms because it can cause breakage.

What lube should I use?

If you plan on using lube for your sex toys, then you should use water-based lube if your sex toy is made from silicone. If you have a glass or metal sex toy, for example, you can still use silicone-based lube for a longer-lasting experience. If you plan on using lube for sex or anal sex and want to use a condom, then avoid oil-based lubes. Stick with water-based or silicone-based lube to avoid breaking the condom.
