One of the most important elements of sex is that you’re well lubricated. And it’s pretty normal for women not to be able to produce enough natural lubricant to ensure smooth sailing. This may be due to stress, lack of sleep, hormones and more. The result: pain and an unpleasurable sexual experience. And who wants to be unsatisfied after sex? No one!
So what is there to do? Well, personal lubricants have come a long way in providing a better sexual experience for both men and women. In fact, a 2014 study from Indiana University revealed that 65 percent of women have used lube to make sex more comfortable, pleasurable or both, while another study of gay men found that 89 percent always use lube during anal sex.
Lubricants come in three main forms: water-based, silicone-based and oil-based.
> Water-based is excellent as it’s safe for all sexual activities (even when using silicone toys!). Importantly, it’s safe to use with latex condoms. This lube may need to be reapplied during sex however, as it has a thin consistency. And because it’s composed mainly of water, it’s easy to clean off with water.
> Silicone-based lube lasts longer and is perfect for underwater loving. It’s safe for use with latex condoms and is great for anal play too, because it’s thicker and longer-lasting than water-based lubes. Bonus: you need very little for a smooth ride, so the product will give you joy time and time again. And another need-to-know: silicone is hypoallergenic, making it perfect for sensitive skin.
> Oil-based lube on the other hand is NOT safe when using latex condoms – it can break the condom! It’s great for use with anal toys though, as it has a thicker consistency than water-based lubes. But again, you can’t use a latex condom on top of your sex toy when using this lube. Rather opt for water- or silicone-based lubrication if you’re covering up.
So why else is wetter better? Well, besides providing a more pleasurable experience for both partners, lube can make sex safer when using condoms. That’s because it reduces the amount of friction when having sex, helping leave the condom intact.
There are many types of lube, all designed to provide extra enjoyment. Some are flavoured (perfect for a lip-smacking blowjob), others cause you to tingle (super sexy), while others are warming (for a hot lovemaking session). You even get desensitizing lube to assist men in lasting longer. Keep in mind though, that if you or your partner experience any discomfort, stop using that lube immediately. A quick wash with soap and water can help provide relief.
We all want to have fun during sex – what’s the point otherwise? – so grab yourself some lube. We recommend trying a bunch to see what works for you. Play around and you’re guaranteed to have a good time. Over and over.
